Q: Does Colorado College offer dental insurance?

A: Colorado College offers dental coverage through Delta Dental Plan of Colorado. The plan is called DeltaPreffered Option (DPO).

Q: What is a DPO?

A: The DPO provides a higher level of benefits if a preferred provider is chosen yet allows a free choice of dentists. DPO places an emphasis on diagnostic and preventative care that encourages you to seek routine preventative dental care in hopes of keeping small problems from becoming larger ones.

Q: How do I use a DPO?

A: You may visit a dentist of your choice. If your dentist is a DeltaPreferred Option member you will receive the highest benefits available on the plan. If you are treated by a DeltaPremier participating dentist you will receive benefits indicated within the plan for non-DPO dentist. Please see the Dental SPD for further coverage explanations.

Q: When can I join the Dental Plan?

A: Benefit eligible employees and any eligible dependents can choose to enroll in the plan when they are first hired. The effective date would be the first of the month coincident with or next following the benefited date of hire. Employees or dependents who are not enrolled when they are initially eligible can enroll at any time but will be considered a "late enrollee".

Q: What benefits are available as a "late enrollee"?

A: Any late enrollee must be continuously enrolled for a period of twelve (12) consecutive months before covered services other than diagnostic and preventative services become payable under the contract. The exception to this rule is an eligible employee or dependent who involuntarily loses coverage through another group insurance plan.

Q: What is the definition of involuntarily losing coverage under another group insurance plan?

A: Involuntary loss of coverage is defined as loss due to death, divorce, loss of job or termination of benefits by employer. Such an employee or dependent will be allowed to enroll within 31 days of the loss of coverage with satisfactory proof of coverage loss.

Q: How many cleaning exams are covered by the DPO?

A: DPO covers two cleaning exams in a twelve month period.

Q: How do I know what to expect to pay out-of-pocket for major dental work?

A: If you anticipate extensive dental services your dental office can submit the treatment plan to DPO for review before any work is actually done. This is known as a predetermination of benefits. A predetermination of benefits allows both you and your dentist to know exactly what is covered and what your plan will pay. There is no charge for having a predetermination done.

Q: Does the DPO offer orthodontic services?

A: DPO offers orthodontic care including braces for dependent children under the age of 19.

Q: Are there maximum benefits under the DPO?

A: There is a $1250 maximum benefit per patient per calendar year. There is also a $1600 orthodontic lifetime maximum per eligible dependent child. If you expect to spend money above these limits on dental care you may want to consider joining the Flexible Benefit Plan.
