Q: What benefit plans are offered by Colorado College?

A: Please refer to the Benefits Overview under the Benefits section of our web site for an explanation of the benefits.

Q: How do I know if I'm eligible for benefits?

A: If you're in a full time (1400 or more annual hours) or part time (1000 to 1399 hours) budgeted position or a continuing (not visiting) faculty member working 4 or more blocks, you are eligible for benefits.

Q: Can I also enroll my dependents on my benefit plans?

A: Colorado College offers many plans that allow you to also cover your dependents. Some of these plans include health, dental, vision and dependent life. Please see your plan details for further information.

Q: Who is considered a dependent for my plan?

A: Colorado College's definition of a dependent is:

  • Legal Spouse

  • A common law spouse or domestic partner

  • Unmarried natural or legally adopted children, step-children, common-law children, domestic partner children under age 19 or unmarried natural or legally adopted children, step-children, common-law children, domestic partner children up to age 24 if a full-time student and in all cases provided they rely on employee for support and maintenance.

  • Unmarried children, step-children, common-law children, domestic partner children if mentally and/or physically disabled for lifetime if they are completely dependent on the employee for support and maintenance

  • Other children for whom the employee has guardianship or legal custody that live in their household and are not married and will be included as a dependent on the employees federal income tax return for the current or next tax year

* Domestic partner - same sex partner or whom the employee lives with in a long-term relationship of indefinite duration. There must be an exclusive mutual commitment, in which the partners agree to be responsible for one another's welfare and share financial obligations.

Q: When are my benefits effective?

A: Benefits are effective the first of the month immediately after you are hired into a benefit eligible position. If hired to start on the first, benefit eligibility begins immediately.

Q: When must I enroll in the benefits?

A: You have 31 days from your initial eligibility date in which to enroll in benefits. If you do not enroll during this period, you must wait until the next scheduled open enrollment unless you have a qualifying event.

Q: What is a qualifying event?

A: There are two types of qualifying events listed by the Internal Revenue Service. They are family status changes and employment changes. Family status changes include marriage, divorce, birth or adoption of a child, death of a spouse/dependent or a dependent child reaching the age limit. Employment status changes include your position changing to a benefit eligible position, you or your dependent qualifying for Medicare or a change in coverage due to a spouse's employment change and affecting benefit coverage. Changes to your benefit plans due to a qualifying event must be made within 31 days of the event. Please contact Human Resources or visit our forms on the web to obtain the proper change forms.

Q: What is open enrollment?

A: Open enrollment is a period during which participants in a benefit program have an opportunity to select an alternate plan being offered to them; or a period when uninsured employees and their dependents may obtain coverage without presenting evidence of insurability.

Q: When is open enrollment?

A: Open enrollment occurs annually at the end of each academic year (May) with enrollment changes effective on July 1st of each year.
