Black Feminist Politics in the Age of Obama

Location

Jerome P. McHugh Student Commons
above Preserve; in the Western Ridge Housing Complex, 1090 N. Cascade Ave. (map)

Description

Why have initial beliefs that the Obama Administration would usher in a new era of inclusion for Black women in politics not lived up to expectations? Why have there been few position of power and leadership for Black women in the Obama administration? Why was there an outpouring of protests preceding President Obama’s nomination of Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court? What happened to Desiree Rogers? What happened to Shirley Sherrod? Why was the Obama Administration’s support for both women either withheld or ill-informed?

Discuss these questions and more with Duchess Harris, Associate Professor & Chair of American Studies at Macalaster College, when she presents "Black Feminist Politics in the Age of Obama."
