MATHEMATICA 7
Mathematica is available in all Mathematics computing labs and in the Library!
There are also many ways to get this on your personal computer or iPhone:
MINITAB 15
30-day Free Trial (fully functional) is available for download on their website:
http://www.minitab.com/products/minitab/free-trial.aspx
JAVA
We use and recommend JGRASP
to edit Java files. Free to download from their website.
You will also need to download the latest JDK from Sun's website java.sun.com.
When installing the JDK, note the location (default is C:\Program
Files\Java\jdk1.6.x_xx). You may want to move this folder to one without spaces,
for simplicity. (eg C:\java).
For Windows and Linux, downloads are available from Sun's website.
Download and install the JDK. On Windows 2000, XP, or Vista you may
need to change a couple environmental variables to make Java work correctly
on your system, if it does not do so automatically. Right-click the My Computer
icon on your desktop and select Properties. Select the Advanced tab. Click
the Environment Variables button. Under "System variables," find
the PATH variable and add this to the end of it:
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.x_xx\bin
Then find the CLASSPATH variable. If it doesn't exist (and it probably won't, if you've never used your system to develop Java code), click the New button, specifying CLASSPATH as its name, and the following value:
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.x_xx\lib
For Mac OS X, downloads are available from Apple.
Please be sure to download the proper version if you have PowerPC or Intel
processor.
TEX and WINEDT
LaTeX and Winedt are available in the Mathematics labs.
You will need to download two programs: the Tex engine, and an editor.
TeX for Windows or Linux PC
MikTEX Tex Engine, free
to download
proTeXt - based
on MikTEX, free
TeX for Mac
MacTex - free
Editors
WINEDT a nice graphical
Tex frontend editor (30-day trial, fully functional, but will bug you to register
after 30 days. Student licenses are $30.)
TexMaker Free
cross-platform TeX editor
WinShell free Tex frontend
editor (with no trial warnings).
LINUX
Linux is used in our computer science courses, and in the computing
lab in TSC 209. We are currently using Fedora 11.
A Free, open-source operating system, comes in many flavors. Here are
just a couple.
