New Sanskrit course offered this spring
Blocks 5-8, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30-6:45 p.m. One-half unit extended format course.
Sanskrit: Classics 141, 142 - Introduction to the Sanskrit language. Geared toward students with little or no experience in Sanskrit. Basic reading and pronunciation skills, emphasizing Sanskrit's unique euphonic system; beginning declensional forms and grammatical structures. Strong focus on in-class oral recitation from memory. Important deadlines for faculty advising for study abroad:
- Monday, February 25, 2005, students must submit petitions, to the Office of Study Abroad and International Students, for study abroad programs not on the CC pre-approved list.
- Tuesday, March 1, 2005, deadline to apply for a Leave of Absence for the 1st semester 2005-2006.
- Monday, March 7, 2005, the International Studies Oversight Committee will review petitions for study abroad programs not on the CC pre-approved list. This is the only occasion, during the second semester, at which the petitions are reviewed and decisions made.
- Monday, May 2, 2005, students must confirm study abroad plans by filing a preliminary course approval form with the Office for Study Abroad and International Students for study on all non-affiliated programs and by filing a leave confirmation with the Registrar.

5/4/05 - Block 8 Global Exchange: Conversations on International Topics / Are All Audiences the Same? A Look at Theater from a Cross Cultural Perspective. Peter Pashov, Drama and Dance, visiting faculty from Bulgaria, and Encho Avramov, frequent Drama and Dance faculty visitor, will share their experiences performing and producing theater in many parts of the world. Pashov is the Director of the State Puppet Theater of Bulgaria, and Avramov is a scenographer. Together they teach action theater, a style known for its refreshing approach in creating stage plays that explore topical and contemporary issues in an imaginative manner. Mauro Sacchi, a native of MIlan, the Italian House Head Resident, and co-chair of Peace Happens at Colorado College this spring, will discuss the international medical organization, Emergency, which intervenes rapidly on behalf of civilian war victims. Founded by Gino Strada in 1994, Emergency is non-religious and non-political, but has its roots in Italian Catholic volunteerism and activism. A film, Collateral Damage, relating stories of children injured through war will be screened at 5:15. The Zoroastrian religion and the Parsi community of India: Professor Rashna Batliwala Singh, Visiting Professor of English at Colorado College, will lead a discussion treating significant aspects of the Zoroastrian religion as well as the social, cultural and political life of the Parsi community of India. Described as the oldest of the revealed credal religions, that has probably had more influence on mankind, directly and indirectly, than any other single faith, the Zorastrian religion has recently been declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Community because of its endangered status. Professor David Gardiner, Religion and Asian Studies, will give an informal talk, with discussion, about the foundations of some religious traditions in India, such as Buddhism and Hinduism. India's history as an advanced civilization is more than double the length of Europe's. Even at the time of Classical Greece, centuries gefore the time of Jesus, profound religious and philosophical thinkers were vibrant in India, some with remarkably "modern" and sophisticated ideas. President Thomas Coburn, Naropa University, gave the Colorado College 2003 Gaylord Endowed Lecture in Asian Studies, and invited the Asian Studies Committee to hold its retreat at Naropa University to discuss teaching about Asia with the Naropa faculty and students.

9/24/04-9/26/04 - ACM African Studies Conference, co-sponsored by Colorado College and Knox College, hosted by Colorado College
Conference intent: Among the 42 colleges of the Global Partners consortium, the strength of the study of Africa in the curriculum varies considerably. Student interest in African Studies is high. Issues of historic college ties in Africa, curricular breadth, faculty initiatives, college priorities, and funding are among the factors governing a college’s curricular inclusion of African Studies. The 2004 African Studies Conference is organized to discuss issues of teaching about Africa at the liberal arts college, to investigate topics of contemporary African scholarship, and to launch a potential network of support and information among the faculty at Global Partners institutions who are teaching about Africa.
The African Studies Conference will have two foci 1) teaching of African Studies at the liberal arts college; 2) issues in contemporary Africa.
The session topics include Building and Sustaining African Studies Programs, Nation Building and Development, Francophone Africa, Conservation and Environmentalism in frica, Science and Health in African Studies, African Literature as a Tool for African Studies, Ethnographic Studies, African Images of the West, Organizing and Teaching African History, The Arts in African Studies, Africa as a Study Abroad Site for Students and Faculty, African Studies and Liberal Arts Colleges.
Special features of the conference include the keynote address by Dr. Thomas Benson, Executive Director, AfricaNetwork; a screening of the film, Oberlin-Inanda: The Life and Times of John L.
