212 Energy. A study of the generation and use of energy in an industrial society, and of the environmental problems created by our energy use. The physical and chemical principles underlying these issues will be emphasized. Topics to be covered include: the physics and chemistry of fossil fuels; air pollution associated with fossil fuels; the science and politics of nuclear energy; the potential of alternative energy sources; the potential for energy conservation. Scientific principles to be covered include: energy and the laws of thermodynamics, atomic structure and the periodic table, chemical reactions and rates.
