My interest in environmental science stems from my passion for the outdoors and academic interests in environmental chemistry and oceanography. Here in the Southwest I greatly enjoy mountaineering, camping, snowboarding, and I'm always looking for new places to explore. In a past life I studied chemical oceanography at MIT and Princeton University, and I've been at the College for four years. At CC I'm responsible for the EV and Chemistry Department laboratories and instrumentation, including thesis students and summer research programs.

I grew up in Kansas in a very small farming town where life was very slow and lots of fun. That's where I learned to appreciate nature and what it provided to us. I love Colorado and the beautiful hiking that is available, but my real love is the Pacific Northwest. Particularly the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington. I LOVE sea kayaking around the islands. The Orca whales fascinate me and I hope someday to expand my knowledge of their lives and the problems we humans are creating for them, in order to work with the agencies that are attempting to protect their environment.

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest instilled in me a deep love for observing & interacting with the natural world. I learned how patiently observing and living a life immersed in the woods and ocean around my home could persuade them to divulge pure beauty. I stand in awe of the courtship dive of a bald eagle pair, the diversity of bryophytes in my backyard survey, and the ever-changing colors of a long summer sunset.
