A Passby Containing Interspersed Clicks and Calls:
On June 25, at 10 p.m., orcas vocalized with calls and echolocation clicks interspersed as they passed by southbound. The graphs below show the location and sequence of selected ecolocation clicks and calls from this passby.

E's show the reconstructed locations of echolocation clicks and C's show the locations of calls. The color coding shows the time sequence over the 25 min of this passby. Notice that most of the 83 localized echolocations and calls are in the first half of the passby (red shading to green). The calls come from a region that is about 150m in length and ~30 m wide while the echolocation clicks come from a much larger region which includes the calling area.

This little figure shows the average location of the echolocation clicks and the average location of the vocalization calls as the sounds were localized over the 25 minutes that it took for this passby to be completed. At the beginning of the passby the calls and echolocation clicks were coming from quite different locations. As time passed, the call track and the echolocation track come together as these sound sources move off together in a southerly direction.
