Thematic Minor - Section Title
 

Students who choose the American Cultural Studies Thematic Minor are engaged in the examination of ethnicity in its intersection with race, class, and gender central categories of American history, cultural, society, and artistic expression.

The American Cultural Studies Thematic Minor cultivates a critical understanding of the Chicano/Latino, Asian/Asian American, Native American and African American experiences and their relations to power and social change in the United States.

6 units minimum.

All students are required:

  • to complete CS185 - Introduction to American Cultural Studies, CS210 - Race, Class, and Gender, and a course on theorizing race.
  • to choose one of four concentrations within the minor:
    • Historical Studies
    • Arts and Culture
    • Culture and Society
  • students take a minimum of 3 units (focusing on at least 2 ethnic groups) from the chosen track as well as 1 unit each from the 2 other tracks. See Courses for information on specific courses.
  • to complete an Integrative Experience project, consisting of a paper, presentation, or other kind of independent work after all other requirements have been fulfilled. Proposals for the Integrative Experience are approved by the ACS Faculty and evaluated by an advisor assigned to the student.
