| The Southwest Studies program combines courses and
research on the American Southwest. The region includes Colorado,
Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, southern California, Utah, and northern
Mexico. Courses are drawn from the colleges
Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences divisions, as well as
general studies. These courses address the land and its people through
offerings such as American Indian and Latino music, art, or literature;
anthropology, history, sociology, or economics of the Southwest; and
geology, field biology, field zoology, or environmental science. The
general studies courses offer the beginning student an overview of the
Southwest. The Southwest Studies Summer Institute provides an in-depth,
interdisciplinary view of different cultural, artistic, social, and
environmental aspects of the Southwest. The Summer Institute is
principally for students pursuing Master of Arts in Teaching degrees for
experienced elementary and secondary teachers.
The Southwest Studies program uses the Hulbert Center (Dern House)
for classes, lectures, student and faculty research, and administrative
offices. Faculty and students interested in Southwest Studies are
welcome to attend Southwest Studies events, such as monthly luncheons
and public lectures, and to receive the newsletter, la
