2005 Summer Institute

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
Program in Southwestern Studies

The Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Southwest Studies
Professor Anne Hyde, Advisor

The Southwest Studies program offers a Master of Arts in Teaching degree for experienced teachers of all grade levels. This program is designed to offer degree candidates opportunities to expand their understanding of Southwest Studies, to acquire knowledge they can apply to their profession, and to examine new developments in the field of education. Degree candidates are required to complete a minimum of eight Colorado College units (32 semester hours), to write a masters research paper (a paper about fifty pages in length based on original research), to pass an oral examination, and to complete two colloquia (week-long afternoon seminars on current topics of concern to educators). All courses are offered during the summer and the degree must be completed in no more than five summers. Up to eight semester hours of graduate credit earned within the past seven years at other accredited colleges or universities may be applied toward the degree.

MAT candidates complete the majority of their requirements through the interdisciplinary Summer Institutes in Southwest Studies. These two-unit institutes are designed to explore a different topic in-depth each summer; the focus of each institute rotates among the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences disciplines.

The 2006 Summer Institute will be "Music and Southwestern Expressive Culture," taught by Professor Victoria Levine.
