Research and Teaching Interests

I specialize in the sociology of science and technology. My empirical research examines the ways in which scientific and technological developments are transforming contemporary culture and social life. In pursuing this line of work, I've become well-versed in sociological literatures on institutions and organizations, economics, politics, and medicine. I'm also interested in intellectual questions shared by the disciplines of history, philosophy, and sociology - issues taken up in debates on the methodological foundations of the social sciences and theories of knowledge, consciousness, morality, and reason. I employ qualitative (historical and ethnographic) methods in my research almost exclusively, but I'm happy to assist students with analytical projects of all sorts.
