Topics in Italian Culture: Italy after Fascism. A study of present-day Italian society through its history, literature and film. The starting point of the course is Neorealism, a revolutionary movement in cinema which became the repository of partisan hopes for social justice in the postwar Italian state. A selection of texts and films produced between 1945 and 1985 will attempt to show in what ways Italian society has fulfilled, and disappointed, the promise of Neorealism.
