Current Interests
My current research is on the meaning of miracles in world religions.
Despite skepticism about miracles since the Enlightenment, religious believers
in all traditions continue to find significance in miracle stories. My
work explores popular enthusiasm for miracles, official regulation of
miracle claims, and religious objections to reliance on miracles. My latest
writing has been on Jehovah's Witnesses, an apocalyptic American sect
founded in the 19th century--and another recent essay explores the relation
between Jonathan Edwards, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Mary Baker Eddy.
Outside the classroom, you can find me enjoying
the fishing and hiking that Colorado offers, as well as racquetball and
I have been known to spend some time over a pool table.
