Current Interests
My specialities are Buddhism and the religions of China and Japan. In
pursuit of my research, I have traveled widely in Asia, including over
six years living and researching in Japan. I spent the 2000-01 academic
year in Japan working on a book on writings of the 9th century Buddhist
monk Kukai. My several articles and translations are related primarily
to Kukai and the Shingon school of Tantric Buddhism that he founded in
Japan.
