Current Interests
My specialities are Buddhism and the religions of China and Japan. In pursuit of my research, I have traveled widely in Asia, including over six years living and researching in Japan. I spent the 2000-01 academic year in Japan working on a book on writings of the 9th century Buddhist monk Kukai. My several articles and translations are related primarily to Kukai and the Shingon school of Tantric Buddhism that he founded in Japan.
