Faculty work together as a team
We are different individuals and we do things differently but we
know how to work together to get things done. . . . We have
different personalities, we have different teaching styles, so there
is a bit of diversity in this very tiny department.

In
successful departments, faculty work together as a team. This
is sometimes taken to mean that everyone is about the same, and
does more-or-less the same things. This is not what we mean;
departments like this can be very difficult for new faculty who
are different (for example, a young women coming into a
department of older men). In successful departments faculty are
diverse, in demographics, teaching style, subfield of physics,
and so on. And they respect each others’ differences and work
to complement each other. Departments like this serve their
students needs very well.
[When you interview] it’s not just about brilliance . . . We try to
pick people that love their work—they really have to have a
passion—they love teaching and they love being with students, and
they’re good people.
