Syllabus

OBJECTIVE: The two main objectives of this course are 1) to introduce students to computer music notation through hands-on experience. In a step-by-step method students will exercise music input, score editing, playback, part extraction and printing. 2) to learn the HTML tag language and how to build a personal home page.
TEXT BOOK:
There is no specific textbook for this workshop style course. However, the course is largely based on several on-line sources of material: a) The Finale Tutorials b) A Finale workshop written by Prof. Hal Owen at the University of Oregon. In addition, numerous web-authoring guides and HTML tutorials are constantly available on the WWW.
REQUIREMENTS:
Each student participating in the class must have an e-mail address. In addition, students will be required to join the Finale Discussion List for the duration of the course. Students should bring two 1.4 MB, High Density, Macintosh formatted disks to every class session. These disks will serve as a backup to all the files created during the half-block. Files should be backed-up on a daily basis.
ASSIGNMENTS & GRADING:
Student will be graded according to their performance in the following projects:

a) Completed FinaleŽ assignments compiled into a portfolio.

b) Final project to be selected out of the following:

  • Notation of an original composition (of medium length)
  • An Arrangement or Orchestration
  • Transcription of a musical manuscript.
  • Musical exercises (Theory, Ear training, theoretical article, etc.)
  • The final project should be discussed with me in advance

  • c) Personal home page as well as WWW collaborative site.

    d) Final exam on the last day of the block (Wednesday, 1/14/99)

    METHOD OF LEARNING: Students will work both individually and in 2-person teams. However, each student will be responsible for the completion of all exercises. The Music Computer Lab will be available at all times during the half-block.
    ATTENDANCE:
    Classes are from 9:30 a.m. -12 p.m. Attendance is mandatory. Absences will not be excused except for medical reasons.
    OFFICE HOURS:
    The best time to talk with me is 15 minutes before or after class. Otherwise call me at ext. 6555 at any time
