Alejandro Vieira
Instructor in Bassoon
Alejandro Vieira is originally from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He earned his Master of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where he was a winner of the annual concerto competition. Alejandro also holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he participated in ensembles ranging in specialty from music of the medieval period to contemporary music. He held the position of second bassoon with the Northern Kentucky Symphony prior to joining the Colorado Springs Symphony, now the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, in January, 2001. Alejandro has performed in many countries and festivals, including France’s Evian Festival; Italy; Austria; Hungary; Ireland; the 1998 World Exposition in Lisbon, Portugal; the Sarasota Music Festival in Sarasota, Florida; the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California; and the National Orchestral Institute in College Park, Maryland. His teachers include William Winstead, Linda Harwell, Phillip Kolker, Denis Michel, Manuel Zegler, and David Fedderly.
Alejandro is also a member of the United States Air Force Academy Band, and currently serves as principal bassoonist of the Concert Band and as bassoonist of the Academy Winds woodwind quintet. Through the United States Air Force Academy, he has had the opportunity to travel across the United States giving performances and masterclasses, and has worked closely with music students ranging from middle school through college. Mr. Vieira has been featured as a soloist with the Concert Band and the Academy Winds as well as a featured recitalist in the band’s Chamber Recital Series at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and Colorado College’s Packard Hall.
In 2002, Mr. Vieira was selected as one of five finalists worldwide in the International Double Reed Society’s Gillet-Fox Bassoon Competition, where he received the award of Honorable Mention. He maintains an active teaching studio in Colorado Springs and is currently the bassoon instructor at the Department of Music at Colorado College. Alejandro and his wife, Azi, both enjoy as much of the outdoors in Colorado as they can, including hiking, camping, cycling, and skiing.
