I Made Lasmawan was born in Bangah, Bali. He made his concert debut as a drummer at the age of eight. In 1977, he graduated from the Conservatory of Traditional Performing Arts (Denpasar, Bali). He taught gamelan throughout Bali and studied drumming with several master drummers, including Bapak I Gede Manik, Bapak I Wayan Berata, Bapak I Gusti Ketut Sedahan, and Bapak I Wayan Nedeh. Lasmawan then studied at the Indonesian College of Traditional Performing Arts in Surakarta, Java, graduating in 1983. He taught there until 1990, when he moved to the United States to teach gamelan; he joined the CC faculty in 1993. Lasmawan has performed throughout Asia, Europe, and North America. He is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. music program at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
