PIANO

  1. The traditional pedal marking involves two signs: the "ped" abbreviation and the asterisk.

Placement: The first sign goes below the lower staff, aligned with the first note affected. The asterisk is aligned underneath the last note affected.

    Size: 2 spaces high (36 EVPU's).

  2. The horizontal line with points that indicate when to release the pedal is an alternative pedal marking that many publishers now use.

Thickness: The thickness of the line varies, but it is usually thicker than a staff line.
