The traditional pedal marking involves two signs: the "ped" abbreviation and the asterisk.

Placement: The first sign goes below the lower staff, aligned with the first note affected. The asterisk is aligned underneath the last note affected.

Size: 2 spaces high (36 EVPU's).

The horizontal line with points that indicate when to release the pedal is an alternative pedal marking that many publishers now use.
Thickness: The thickness of the line varies, but it is usually thicker than a staff line.

To indicate that the toe should be used:
To indicate that the heel should be used:

To indicate that the right foot should be used, symbols are written above the staff.

To indicate that the left foot should be used, symbols are written below the staff.

To indicate a change of toe and heel, the 2 symbols are placed next to each other, with a slur above or below them.

To indicate a change of foot, the 2 symbols are placed above and below the notes.
