Fingerings

Fingerings are the numbers that tell or suggest which fingers are to be used on individual notes in a piece, and they are interpreted differently for different instruments.

There is not a set standard of where fingerings should be placed in a score, but they should be put in the most conspicuous place possible. Placement depends on the type of music-- vocal, instrumental, single or double staff-- as well as the existence of items like triplets and position marks.
1. Single note instrumental music: fingerings go as close to the notes as possible.

2. Piano music: Right hand fingerings go above the upper staff, left hand fingerings go below the lower staff.
   

3. When a note has an accent as well as a fingering, the accent goes in its normal position, the fingering goes above the accent.
   

4. When there is double-stemming, the fingerings are separated and put next to the notes to which they apply.
   

5. Fingerings may also be put to the left of the noteheads
   

   Fingerings should not be placed to the right of the noteheads unless there is an accidental on the left side ofthe note and there is no room above or below the note.
