Michigan Electronic Library: includes history on a particular day, visual resources, documents, information on historians and philosophers.
History Index: a number of gateways to countries and to different topics.
History Project: useful source of links on a number of areas specifically related to the Mediterranean at the European University Institute.
Virtual Religion Index: links to sources on Islam.
Gateway to World History: links to documents, images, and sites.
Cartographic Images: collection of historical maps with explanations.
Islamic Timeline: clear presentation of the complexities of who ruled where and when.

WebMuseumThe WebMuseum, a wonderful collection of paintings from a wide range of artists, time periods, and places.  Good explanations of a number of paintings.
Mark Harden's Artchive: Art Resources Links:  Many paintings, easily accessible.  The WebMuseum and this collection complement each other well.
Lycos Pictures and Sounds:  Quite a few interesting historical images--paintings, caricatures, photos.
Web Gallery of Art:   Many images of paintings and sculpture from 1200-1700, often with biographies and analyses.
Paris Pages Musee d'Orsay Collection Paintings:  Mostly Impressionist paintings from their very rich collection.
Photo Archives Data:  the collection gathered by the U.S. Holocaust Museum, including photos from World War I to the 1950s.
Ancient Mediterranean
Exploring Ancient Cultures: a number of links and sites to ancient and medieval cultures.
Dead Romans: a great source of information on all areas of Roman culture and society.
The Ancient World : The Perseus Project:   very rich site including texts, maps, images, descriptions.
Ancient History Sourcebook :  a number of important primary texts to explore.
Medieval Mediterranean
Netserf:  rich site with numerous links on a range of interesting subjects.
Medieval and Renaissance History:  includes some sources on ancient history as well as key sites for the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, organized by general site and by more specific subject.
Labyrinth:   includes resources on special topics, on countries, as well as articles.
Medieval Sourcebook:  original documents, including chronicles of the Crusades and saints' lives.
Islamic Caliphate page: original sources.
Heaven and Earth:   many images and maps of the earth and the skies.  In French, but the images are not.

World War I Document Archive: Primary documents of WWI, most in English, including
conventions, treaties, official papers, personal reminiscences, and a biographical dictionary.
Avalon Project at the Yale Law School: This is an on-going collection of documents "relevant to the fields of Law, History, Economics, Politics, Diplomacy and Government." The documents are categorized by century, are international in nature and go back to Ancient Greece.
