DISTRICT GEOLOGIST
Position Summary:
Assist with the annual drilling program of the Kansas District in helping to choose drill site locations. Generate drilling progs, correlate logs and enter into database, and help choose zones to perforate and frac. Monitor and direct sample desorption in the field and help gather and desorb samples as needed. Generate maps and cross-sections using subsurface, geophysical, production or other data. Perform field evaluations during drilling and conduct and interpret well logging operations. Work closely with land, engineering, and operations departments, and the District Manager to initiate and develop these projects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review scout tickets, sample descriptions, logs, well site and geophysical data
- Map subsurface geological and geophysical data
- Evaluate and interpret subsurface geological and geophysical data and assist with drill site recommendations to management
- Evaluate well site geologic data as projects are drilled
- Make written or oral presentations to management
- Work closely with other departments representatives in order to achieve company goals
- Travel and network with outside industry representatives
Qualifications:
- Geology degree from four-year college or university, or five or more years related experience and/or training
- Ability to read and comprehend common scientific and technical journals
- Ability to comprehend land survey, coordinate systems, and land and legal descriptions
- Ability to effectively present information to management
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry
- Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
- Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.)
- Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables
- Strong communication and organization skills
- Proficiency with geologic software, Microsoft Office applications, Internet, and well site equipment
- Familiarity with drilling rigs, drilling operations and well completion practices
- Familiarity with logging operations and analysis

AGENCY MISSION AND CHALLENGE
At the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), we support the vision of a sustainable future by protecting and managing the natural resources that belong to the citizens of Washington. We provide professional, forward-looking stewardship of state trust lands, native ecosystems and natural resources under the leadership of the Commissioner of Public Lands, an elected official.
DNR manages over 5 million acres of state-owned land that includes forest, range, commercial, agricultural and aquatic lands. We generate revenue that supports public schools, state institutions and county services. But managing lands is only half of our story. We also protect other public resources such as fish, wildlife, water, and provide public access to outdoor recreation. Two of our largest and most important state-wide resource protection responsibilities are fire prevention and suppression, and overseeing forest practices. Job Classification: Natural Resource Scientist 3
Type of Position: This is a project position. This project has guaranteed funding through June of 2009, with the expectation of further funding through June of 2011.
This position is represented by the WFSE. Once appointed to this position the incumbent will be required to pay union dues or other representation fee within the first 30 days of employment.
Monthly Salary Range: $4,237 – $5,557 monthly

POSITION PROFILE
This position conducts landslide inventory and hazard mapping for the Landslide Hazard Zonation (LHZ) Project, as well as training and assisting new LHZ staff in the use of mapping protocols.
Responsibilities include interpretation of remotely sensed imagery (photos, digital elevation models, orthophotos) for slope stability as well as site visits to verify and calibrate interpretations, following an established protocol, and reporting of these interpretations as per that protocol.
Also responsible for responding to reviewer's comments, proofing (editchecking) their own work prior to submission to review.
As directed by the supervisor, this person may conduct post-storm or post-earthquake landslide inventory studies.
REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of forest practices rules
- Knowledge of the Forest Practices board manual for unstable slopes
- ability to recognise landslides and landforms using remotely sensed imagery
- ability to recognise landslides in the field
- Engineering Geologist License for the State of Washington or the ability to obtain said license within 6 months of hire
- A Bachelor's degree with major study in earth science AND three years of professional work experience, OR
- A Master's degree will substitute for two years experience and a Ph.D. degree will substitute for all of the required experience, provided the field of major study was in the area of specific specialty
- Well-developed computer skills
DESIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in the identification, assessment, and mapping of landslide hazards.
- Ability to use standard field equipment (Brunton compass, hand-held GPS unit, digital camera, laptop PC, etc.).
- Ability to use ArcGIS 9 at the Journeyman level
SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
- Must have current state driver’s license, and have 2 years of driving experience.
- Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.
