Practicum Student

A student in a course who spends part of the day at a school in order to see theory being put into practice. The student's requirements will be outlined by the Education department's faculty member who is teaching the course. See specific course syllabi for more information.

Student Aide

A student who spends 40 hours during one semester working in the same classroom. This student usually has little or no teacher education background but is enthusiastic to learn. The student can work with individuals and small groups. The cooperating teacher gives the aide oral feedback, answers questions, and completes a simple rubric at the end of the experience. See ED100: College Aides for more information.

Student Teacher

A student who has been accepted into the teacher education program and has completed all the required methods courses. Student teaching spans three to four months, during which the student gradually takes over for the cooperating teacher. The cooperating teacher attends an orientation at Colorado College and is highly involved in student feedback, meeting formally with the student and completing formal evaluations with the College supervisor at least twice. See the following web sit areas for more information: Becoming a Cooperating Teacher and The Student Teaching Handbook.

Student Intern

A student in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. This student first completes all methods courses as well as student teaching. The internship phase begins during the second semester as this student takes over the same class(es) in which he/she completed student teaching. The cooperating teacher then steps out of the classroom for the rest of the semester, becoming a Teacher On Special Assignment (TOSA) for the department and/or school. TOSA roles are determined by the cooperating teacher and principal. For more information, see Internship Phase and Becoming a Cooperating Teacher.

Mentor Teacher

This teacher is chosen by the MAT student before the internship phase begins. The department encourages students to find someone other than the cooperating teacher to serve as the mentor. In January, a half-day induction program is held at Colorado College in order to train mentors to support and challenge MAT students during their internship in a non-evaluative role. For more information, go to Mentor Training.
