LARRY STIMPERT
Larry Stimpert is Professor of Economics and Business at Colorado
College. Professor Stimpert received his B.A. in economics, magna
cum laude, from Illinois Wesleyan University and his M.B.A. in
finance from Columbia University. Professor Stimpert received
his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,
where he was recognized for the quality of his teaching while
still a graduate student. He has also served on the faculty and
taught strategic management courses at the undergraduate, masters,
and Ph.D. levels at Michigan State University. At Colorado College,
he has been awarded the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professorship
and has received the Sidney G. Winter Award for his contributions
to economics and business education.
Prior to entering the academic field, he worked in the railroad
industry and served in various marketing and economic analysis
positions at the Southern Railway Company and the Norfolk Southern
Corporation. Later he worked as a Manager of Marketing and Pricing
for the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company.
His research and teaching interests focus on top managers and
their influence on strategic decision making and organizational
strategies. He has written on many strategy issues, including
managerial responses to environmental change and organizational
decline, business definition and organizational identity, the
management of corporate strategy and diversification, corporate
governance, and company strategies following deregulation. His
articles and reviews have appeared in the Academy of Management
Journal, the Academy of Management Review, the Journal of Management
Studies, and the Strategic Management Journal. He has also co-authored
a strategic management text. Professor Stimpert is a member of
the Academy of Management, the Strategic Management Society, the
Southern Management Association, and the Academy of Business Education.
He serves on the editorial review board of the Journal of Management,
and he has previously served as a co-editor of the Journal of
Management Inquiry.
During the 2002-2003 academic year, he was an ACE Fellow at Earlham
College where he also served as Special Assistant to the President.
At Earlham, he assisted in budgetary planning and forecasting
projects and participated in meetings of the college’s Budget
Committee, worked with members of the accreditation Self-Study
Committee, served on the Ad Hoc Residential Life Committee, attended
meetings of the Curricular Planning Committee that implemented
a major revision in Earlham’s general education program,
and participated in all meetings of the school’s Senior
Staff, College Conference, and Board of Trustees.
At Colorado College, Professor Stimpert currently serves on
the Faculty Executive Committee and the college’s Re-Accreditation
Self-Study Committee. He has chaired the college’s Social
Science Executive Committee and the Campus Design Review Board.
For many years, he has directed the Economics and Business Department’s
Perspectives on Business Program, a program of visiting faculty,
executives-in-residence, symposia and special events designed
to enhance economics and business education at Colorado College.
Larry and his wife, Lesley, have two young children, Connor
and Renee. He enjoys hiking, backpacking, and skiing as well as
gardening, reading, and playing the piano.
