Ancient World Thematic Minor

The ancient Near East and Mediterranean areas as the background of Western Civilization. Emphasis on Greco-Roman and Biblical forms of thought, organization and artistic expression as perennial influences. (Not available to Classics majors.)

 

Five units minimum.


1. Students may take up to two units of introductory work from the following:

CL-HY-FE 130: Reinvention of the Greeks (one unit counts for this minor)

CL 125/HY 209: Ancient Multicultures

CL-HY-PH 116:Greek History and Philosophy (2 units)

CL-HY 114: Goddesses, Heroes etc.


EN 320: Issues in Renaissance Literature--The Bible as Literature (1 unit)<

OR one or both of 

RE 111:Introduction to the Jewish Bible/Old Testament
RE 112:Introduction to the New Testament


PS 103:The Western Political Tradition (1 unit counts)


Students must take at least three units of work from the following:

PH 101/CL 210 Greek Philosophy
CL 218 Homer
AH 207 Greece and Rome

AH 209 Late Antiquity
CL 219 Greek Drama/DR 201 Origin and Early Forms of Theatre (or other
appropriate Drama course)

CL/HY 216 The Romans

CL 226 Empire and Power--Individual and Family in Ancient Rome

CL 220 Myth and Meaning
CL 221/HY 302 The Invention of History

Students must have a reading knowledge equivalent to the first two blocks worth of Greek, Latin, or Hebrew.

 

The Integrative Experience: Normally done in connection with a course from the list of non-introductory courses, to be designated by the instructors each year. A paper or project investigating some aspect of the ancient world intensely but in its wider cultural and historical context.
