Kenchreai Excavations 2008

 

 

v     What is it?  An interdisciplinary research project that explores social structure, cultural diversity, and religious history in the eastern Roman provinces through excavation and the study of material culture, natural history, and ancient settlement and burial.

v     Where is it?  The excavations are located at Kenchreai, the bustling port of the great city of Corinth in southern Greece and one of the busiest harbors of the Roman Empire.

v     Who are we?  An international team of archaeologists, art historians, anthropologists, and geologists directed by Joseph L. Rife, Classics Professor at Macalester College.  We are sponsored by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and we work in collaboration with Elena Korka, Director of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities for the Greek Ministry of Culture.

v     Who are you?  Undergraduates without prior experience are invited to participate in this exciting project as junior team members who learn archaeology and ancient history while digging and participating in advanced research with world experts.

v     What will you do?  Junior team members will assist senior staff members in excavation, field documentation, drawing, photography, architectural survey, artifactual study, and conservation.  They will also participate in an educational program coordinated by Classics Professor Mireille Lee, including seminars by experts in different fields and excursions to major sites and museums.

v     What will you earn?  Those desiring credit will receive a transcript issued by College Year in Athens recommending six (6) credits.

v     Where will you stay?  We lodge at a comfortable family-run hotel in Archaia Korinthos, the village on the site of the ancient city of Corinth, roughly one hour south of Athens.

v     When will it happen? Ca. May 29 to ca. July 8, 2008

v     How much will it cost?  Around $3400 for the six-week program; students arrange their own overseas airfare.
