Classics is the study of Greek and Latin languages--a way to learn how to really use one's mother tongue-- and of Greek and Roman cultural products, histories etc. as objects in themselves and models for individual and collective lives in the present. This used to be elite education, required of all liberal arts students. Now it’s democratically available. Our program is an area study with
connections to other areas: anthropology, linguistics, religion and myth,
philosophy, history, history of science, politics, art and archaeology,
comparative literature and performing arts. Its center is the languages
and literature, available to students as a major with varying emphases and
intensities. |
