About the Project

This website was created to accompany my senior thesis, called Intervisibility and the Chacoan Regional System. I traveled to five Bonito-phase sites, namely Kin Bineola, Tsin Kletsin Candelaria, Kin Klizhin, Site 1572 above Pueblo Bonito, and observed what line-of-sight connections are present from each location. I was able to conclude that these sites were either built to be highly visible or to provide extensive views of the region, suggesting that intervisibility, or the quality of having line-of-sight connections with another point on the landscape, was very important.

To illustrate this idea further, this website includes information on other archaeological sites in the region with impressive line-of-sight connections, including Site 1088 on the Chaco Canyon’s west mesa, and Kin Ya’a, a very tall structure to the north.
