We started off finishing up the NW quad (as it had been interrupted by t-storms). Drawing artifacts, mapping, and pulling flags. Then we moved onto the SW quad. We flagged the site, finding rock piles 31-38 and concentrations 13-15. Overall, it was much more sparse of a quad than the other 2 (and appears to be, 3) quadrants. A lot of the quad is wash, which could be affecting things.

I started working with lithics with Trevor. We found a total of 9 tools worth recording, including 2 projectile points. In all, we found 20 tools in the three concentrations of the SW quad including the general site as well. A total of 4 Chapin B/W sherds were found and some Mesa Verde B/W sherds, but mostly undifferentiated grayware jar body sherds, surprise! I think that since more Chapin B/W sherds have been found, it may be later that the other Basketmaker sites we've recorded, as I hypothesized earlier. I haven't seen anything that would cause me to change my mind.

One interesting new "find" today was after looking at the possible paleo point from the NW quad, Ruth came up with the theory that it is a broken paleo point that Archaic people found, retouched and used again. She based this off of the fact that the point is lopsided and has been majorly retouched on one edge. We believe it was retouched by Archaic people because it looks like it was corner notched.

As I stated in yesterday's entry, slope wash seems to have spread out the rock piles so that they have little to no topographic relief and are several meters in diameter. Due to this slope wash it is difficult to tell what the original shape and extent of the rock pile may have been and therefore makes it additionally difficult to say what the size of any potential surface structures may have been. Although we found several upright slabs in the NW quarter it seems like it will be difficult to say what size of surface rooms they would support as they measure less than a meter in length (the line of slabs).
