5MT 17272

5MT 17272, also known as Birthday Pueblo (it was found on a crew members birthday by the 2003 Field Archaeology class), is a late Pueblo II-Pueblo III (AD 1100-1300) habitation located on the mesa top. The site has striking visibility; the Abajos, Elk Ridge, Cedar Mesa, Sleeping Ute, the La Platas, and the San Juans are all clearly visible from the high spot the pueblo is located on.

Birthday Pueblo consists of a roomblock, 2 kivas, a tower and 2 middens. The masonry is made up of rough sandstone cobbles with some pecking and shaping. Based on the rubble, it appears the roomblock may have had up to 20 rooms in 2 stories at one time.

I didn't take this picture, but I'm pretty sure it's the La Plata mountains to the east. Everybody checking out the awesomeness of the view at Birthday Pueblo. Looking south towards Sleeping Ute Mountain from the top of the rubble mound.
