122 Techniques in Photographic Printing. All the work done in this course will be produced in one form of reversed tonality or another; everything that ordinarily is positive will be rendered in the negative. The technical range of processes applied will be broad. We will start with the photogram, cliché verre , chemo-prints, and paper negatives. Our exploration will then continue into more contemporary means, Kodak, direct positive processing, Scala positives inverted, color transparencies reversed, digital flipping, and the like. Prerequisite: Art Studio 220 and a portfolio approved by Charles Walters . (Not offered 2006–07.) ½ unit — Klipper.

201 Printmaking. Introduction to historic printmaking processes as well as contemporary computer-based techniques. A variety of techniques may be covered including etching, lithography, woodcut, and monotype. Digital manipulation of imagery in Photoshop for use in photolithography and polymer plate letterpress may also be covered. Although technical processes are introduced, the primary focus is conceptual; emphasis is placed on thinking as a graphic artist and printmaker (in reverse, in multiple, etc.). 216 Video Art. Introduction to non-traditional use of video, including non-linear narrative and installation. Will cover basic tools and techniques including camera and lighting and beginning level editing software. Prerequisite: declared art major or consent of instructor. 1 unit — Raffin.

220 Photography. A foundation course in photographic technique directed toward artistic ends. Using and understanding the camera, films, and printing. Extensive photographing as basis for seeing and composition. Short survey of photographic history. Students provide their own cameras. 226 Book and Book Structures. A studio course in the invention, design, and making of books. Students are given a basic grounding in the primary means of book organization, binding, and fabrication with emphasis on the unique character of codex organization. They are encouraged to invent their own books using a wide variety of techniques for the interrelations of text, image and color. May be offered as a block or as a year-long extended format course. Blocks 1-4 and /or Blocks 5-8: Chinese Calligraphy. This course will introduce students to the origin and history of Chinese calligraphy and to the interrelationship between Chinese calligraphy and painting — including bamboo, orchid and bird painting. This is a hands-on course; students are expected to practice Chinese calligraphy several times a week, to get to know how to use Chinese brushes and charcoal ink, and to develop an understanding of Chinese art and culture through brushwork.
