LOG OF IRB DECISIONS AT COLORADO COLLEGE

GLOSSARY

Complete proposals (see the requirements on the "Applying for IRB Approval" page), including copies of data collection instruments, consent forms, and a confirming email from your faculty sponsor are due VIA EMAIL to the Chair of the IRB on the second Tuesday of the block.  The IRB meets on the second Thursday of the block, and you will be notified about the IRB decision regarding your proposal by 5:00 on the second Friday of the block.  Plan to begin data collection on the second Saturday of the block.

Given the problems inherent in doing research within a one-block format, the Chair of the IRB will make every effort to expedite the review of student research proposals.  Proposals most likely to receive expedited treatment are those that:

1) rely on adult members of the Colorado College community as research participants; 2) entail survey research in which participants clearly volunteer to participate or entail observation of naturally occurring and public behaviors; 3) entail no deception of the participants; 4) entail no or only minimal risk of harm to the participants; and 5) entail procedures to assure the confidentiality of the participants' identities.  Neither the IRB not the Chair can guarantee that any project will receive expedited review.  Researchers should make every effort to submit their proposals by the second Tuesday of the block and should not expect to begin data collection before the second Saturday of the block.

During summers and other break periods, the IRB does not meet, but the Chair of the IRB can consider your proposal and call a "virtual" meeting of the Board.  Given the vagaries of travel schedules, a decision can take up to two weeks, so be sure to submit such proposals as early as possible.  When the Chair is not available, he or she will post "out of office" instructions for another member of the IRB to be contacted.
