The Colorado College Department of Anthropology invites applications for a tenure track position in biological anthropology beginning fall 2003 at the Assistant Professor level. PhD and teaching experience required. Candidates are expected to be active scholars and committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching. Research interests in bioarchaeology are preferred; candidates are encouraged to identify secondary interests in which they would be prepared to offer an undergraduate course. Preference will be given to candidates who can also contribute to one or more of our interdisciplinary programs, such as Asian Studies, African Studies, Latin American Studies, Environmental Science, and Women’s Studies. Candidates would be expected to teach both introductory and advanced courses in biological anthropology and to develop opportunities for undergraduate research.

Colorado College is an undergraduate liberal arts institution with an intensive modular schedule that is uniquely suited to in-depth faculty-student interactions, including research collaborations. The successful candidate will be broadly trained in biological anthropology and interested in contributing to dialogue in a four-field department. Candidates whose work meaningfully integrates aspects from one or more other subfields will be at an advantage. The successful candidate will be committed to the mission of a liberal arts college, will support and contribute to the goal of achieving greater diversity at Colorado College, and will be able to work effectively with the many constituencies at the college as a contribution to a positive learning and work environment for all members.

The Biology Department invites applications for a tenure-track position for a microbiologist (Ph.D. required) beginning September 2, 2003. We are seeking candidates who explore evolutionary questions about microorganisms using the tools of molecular biology. The organismic specialty of applicants is open, but the successful candidate is expected to teach an introductory course in microbiology, intermediate courses in cell biology or genetics, and to develop upper-level courses in the area of her/his specialty. Candidates with expertise in developmental biology and/or bioinformatics are especially welcome, and applicants should describe their experience in these areas in a cover letter.

The college has a distinctive modular “block plan” calendar in which the academic year is divided into eight 3 1/2 week blocks. During each block students take, and faculty teach, one course at a time with a maximum student enrollment of 25. Beginning in the fall of 2003, faculty will have two open blocks without any teaching duties, and, in the Biology Department, faculty also have an independent study block in which they supervise student research projects. Because science courses on the block plan are fast-paced and intense, the Biology Department feels that it is important for new faculty to have some teaching experience before starting at CC.

While the college is noted for its dedication to teaching undergraduates, engaging students in research is regarded as an important part of undergraduate education. Tenure-track faculty in biology are expected to engage in on-going research that enhances their professional expertise and involves students. Post-doctoral experience, though not required, is valuable for a new faculty member establishing a research program. Faculty are encouraged, but not required, to seek funding sources outside the college. The Department has a Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant which supports student research during the summer with student stipends and funds for research supplies.

The Biology Department has an excellent support staff, which provides secretarial services and laboratory preparation/set-up for courses. In addition, the Department has paraprofessionals (recent college graduates) who provide teaching assistance for most introductory courses. Biology is a popular major at the college, and about 60-70 students graduate with a biology major each year. More information about the Biology Department can be found at http://www.coloradocollege.edu/Dept/BY/ .
