Anna Harmon ‘09

Anna Harmon ‘09 Previous to my summer at the Post and Courier, the only education I’d received in journalism and journalistic writing was a semester of writing for the Catalyst and Office of Communications. As an English major, I had developed critical thinking and cohesiveness as a writer, but not in the style that reporters use – by taking on the Catalyst and Office of Communications positions, I began to experiment with the different yet familiar style (having read plenty of newspaper articles). With this experience, I was able to land an internship at one of the oldest papers in the South, the Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina.

Izabela Ragan ‘09

Izabela Ragan ‘09 The internship I participated in this past summer was a very successful way to learn a lot about the veterinary field. I now understand what it takes to run a small veterinary clinic, what kind of clients the clinic draws in, how to work with clients and patients and much more. The staff really opened up their doors and let me explore every aspect of the clinic. It’s been such a tremendous learning experience.

This past summer I had the privilege of working in New York City for Lehman Brothers - one of the four largest “pure” investment banks in the U.S. at the time. What made my time with the firm particularly interesting was working for Lehman during a “bearish” market. With this economic environment, I saw firsthand how a high-profile company had to deal with adversity via implementing diversified global investment strategies, applying smart calculated risk management, and relying on their strong client relationships. I also was able to observe firsthand the firm as it rebounded several times from a hostile takeover, adjusted to a change in the CFO and COO, struggled with ridding themselves of some tier-3 investments and shopped around their investment management division for some fresh capital. As an Economics major and an Asian Studies minor with an interest in pursuing a career in financial services, it was an opportunity of a lifetime.

Katherine Wright '02

Katherine Wright '02 After graduating from Colorado College, I wasn’t sure what I wanted out of my professional life, but I did know what I wanted out of my personal life: more powder days. I moved to Park City, UT with some college friends, and spent the ski season bartending and enjoying lots of ski days.

That Spring, I spent a month traveling through the Himalayas, and I had the opportunity to meet with a woman working in International Development; since studying abroad in Turkey my junior year, I had been interested in this profession. I asked her what experience I needed to break into her field; she recommended a Master’s degree and the Peace Corps. I returned to Park City that summer determined to begin my path to a professional life. After a lot of research, I discovered the Peace Corps Master’s International program.

Melissa Romero '04

Melissa Romero '04 I was born and raised into a large, traditional Mexican family in Los Angeles, CA. In the environment where I was raised, I was constantly taught about the importance of education and told that if I worked hard I could finish high school and even go to college: a challenge that no family member of mine had ever taken on to this point.

Laura Dickerson '99

Laura Dickerson '99 I never imagined I’d get an interview with Teach For America, and when I did, I was terrified. I had heard the full-day interviews were grueling. I went to the Colorado College Career Center and practiced the interview with one of the staff members there. She even videotaped me and I got to see how much of a fidgeter I was! The next thing I knew, I was teaching high school special education in Helena, Arkansas.

Teran Martin ’03

Teran Martin I can still remember being bombarded by opportunities as I walked through the Worner Center. Everywhere I looked was a new club to join, event to attend, or internship to investigate. As I sampled all that I could, each provided me with additional mentors and challenged me to grow.
