Parents: How You Can Help

Many students choose to attend a liberal arts college because they have a variety of talents, skills, and interests; consequently, many have difficulty determining a major and an after-college direction. At the Career Center we work with students to help them explore and understand their strengths, interests, and values and where they overlap to help them focus on finding a job or career they will do well in and enjoy.  The sooner students start to reflect on why education is important and how it will be applied to their life after college, the better. Here are some ways we can help:

First -Years

For the typical first year student, career planning is not an immediate concern. Students are focused on choosing classes, finding their way around campus, and making new friends and experiencing new freedoms. Exploration is an important part of the first-year experience. One more way for students to explore is through the Career Center.

Sophomores

By the end of the sophomore year, students need to declare a major. The Career Center offers several ways to help sophomores find direction and make wise choices. Students are encouraged to meet with a staff member to discuss career possibilities related to their interests, skills, abilities, and values. We have assessments that can help students learn more about themselves in relation to career or graduate school choices. We may have students take the MBTI Step II (strengths and values), and the Strong (interests and values) to learn more about who they are, what’s important to them, what they want to do and where they want to do it. The Career Center website, Career Resource Library, and our Alumni Online Directory are very helpful resources at this time.

Juniors

Juniors need to start thinking about life after Colorado College. Now that students know their majors, gaining an internship related to possible career interests should be the focus. Our staff will assist students in the internship process. Students should be doing research, collecting information, and submitting applications for fellowships and graduate school. They should always have an updated resume. This is a busy time for students and we can assist them with these tasks.

Seniors

Seniors who are using the Career Center for the first time can become overwhelmed. They need to focus on a resume, recommendation letters, job searches and/or narrowing down and applying for graduate school. The Career Center can help with interview preparation and mock interviews. We give advice and even offer a chance to network through our Alumni Online Directory . Students should participate in the senior programs and in the Internship & Job Fair where they can learn about job opportunities and practice their networking skills. Students should also register with our online internship and job database, SUCCESS.

A Few Words About Internships

For students exploring a career interest, an internship is a great opportunity to get an inside view of a field. Internships can often provide a bridge between the academic and so-called “real world.” Internships also help develop skills and knowledge and are usually seen by employers as important experience, making the students more competitive for jobs and graduate schools. Please encourage your student to do a minimum of two internships during the undergraduate years. The Career Center provides information on thousands of internship opportunities across the country.
