What Kinds of Trips Can I Go On?
Hiking/Backpacking
Whether you want to go out for an afternoon of hiking near campus, or participate in a five-day block break trip in Utah, the ORC has done it all. Colorado Springs is in the vicinity of many great hiking spots within an hour of campus. Tarry All Peak, Eleven Mile Canyon, the Bar Trail and Incline up Pikes Peak are fantastic afternoon trips. Backpacking trips typically go out over weekends or block breaks. Such trips include summiting Pikes Peak and other Fourteeners in Colorado, canyoneering in Utah, meandering through the deserts of the Southwest and all throughout the Rocky Mountains.
Biking
Mountain biking and road biking trips are lead through the ORC. Every year over first block break the CC Cycling Team and ORC lead a road biking trip from campus to Aspen, Colorado. Mountain biking trips have also been lead over block breaks in the past. The Colorado Springs area, Fruita, Colorado, and Moab Utah have all been destinations for mountain biking trips.
Rafting/Kayaking
Rafting trips down the Colorado River and Arkansas River are offered throughout the year. Day trips to the Arkansas River and Cripple Creek provide kayaking from beginners to experts. Block break trips are also offered during the warmer months- down the Colorado in both Colorado and Utah.
Running
Running is one of most CC students' favorite activities. Check out our running oportunities.
Caving
Caving in the colorado springs area is fun and DIRTY! If you've ever wanted to go on a spelunking adventure, this is the type of trip for you!
Climbing
There is so much climbing in the rockies to explore and CC students have been at the front of it for decades, so jump on board and climb.
Snowshoeing/Sledding/Playing in the Snow
If you are looking for an alternative to the busy ski slopes of Summit County, the ORC can provide day trips, weekend trips, and snowy block break trips. Groups have done winter ascents of fourteeners, adventures near ski resorts, and learned to build snow caves when in need. The winter is not void of ORC trips!!
Skiing/Telemarking
If you are a beginner or simply need to hone your skiing skills, the ORC leads winter trips to a nearby ski mountain for telemarkers. These are usually day trips and tele skis can be rented through the Ahlberg House.
Scavenger Hunts!
Not exactly a trip, but still LOADS of fun for your on-campus enjoyment.
Invent New Trips!
New trips happen all the time, so if you have an idea for something fun and creative, let the leaders know so it can become a reality!
Special Programs:
NSO Backpacking Trips
During New Student Orientation, the ORC provides incoming first years with the opportunity to go on a service-oriented backcountry backpacking trip. Backcountry organizations such as Colorado Founrteeners Initiative and Rocky Mountain Field Institute provide groups of first years with the opportunity to stay in the backcountry while working on important restoration, trail maintenance, and conservations of the outdoors.
FOOT Trips
The ORC runs First-year Outdoor Orientation Trips for new first year students over first block break. Many, many trips go out, and it is a great opportunity for those first years who are interested in the outdoors and are in need of skills acquisition and want to get involved with the ORC. These are backpacking trips throughout the Colorado high country.
Hut Trips
Fifth block break is notoriously snowy- perfect for the high country huts to be utilized by CC students! Beginner, intermediate, and advanced hut trips are available, and led by CC’s talented skiers. The huts of the Tenth Mountain Division, as well as others around Colorado have been destinations of the Hut Trips.
Its easy to get involved!!!
The ORC is open to all students, regardless of previous outdoor experience. The ORC meets the first three Tuesdays of every block at 12:15 in the WES Room. All are welcome!
