Academic Technology Incubator Program

Do you have an assignment or course you’d like to redesign, utilizing more technology?  A program or approach you’d like us to research?  Production needs, such as scanning or digitizing materials? Or a technology-intensive research or publishing project? 

ATS is pleased to announce a new, project-based program to better meet your “extraordinary” needs. Submit a short proposal, and the ATS team will work to bring human and financial resources to the table to help see your project through to completion.

 

The Concept

The Academic Technology Incubator Program aims to better address the following academic technology needs at CC:

  • Production support for faculty
    • “I have 200 slide images that I’d really like to incorporate on my web site/in to my PowerPoint presentations, but I just don’t have the time to scan them and edit them myself!”

  • Support for resource-intensive instructional technology projects
    • “I have a database-driven website project I’d like to work with you on, to make my research available for student assignments and research.”

  • Support for course or assignment makeovers
    • I’d really like to rethink how I teach my accounting class, to better take advantage of technology in my assignments, but I just don’t have the time to research and think about that while I’m teaching blocks 5, 6 & 7!”

  • Encouraging innovation and “outside the block” thinking
    • “I just came back from the American Association of Geographers conference, and one of my colleagues was talking about how she uses this Cutting Edge Technology X in her courses.  Think we could test/try something like that here?”

  • Capitalizing on summer creation/production potential
    • "I'd really like to gather some multimedia resources together this summer, in sort of a 'multimedia textbook' for my Block 2 class."

  • Providing proactive rather than reactive support to our community
    • "I'll be teaching a new course next year. I'd love to know what other faculty in my field have been using/doing, in terms of instructional technology and assignments for this particular topic. "

Call for Proposals

ATS team members will continue to offer the daily and blocky instructional technology support and consultations that we have always offered.  In addition, twice a year, (in the middle of each semester), ATS will promote a Call for Proposals to faculty, asking for project proposals in the following categories:

  • Production Support
  • Resource-Intensive Instructional Technology Project
  • Course or Assignment Makeover
  • R&D or Pilot Project

The next proposal due date is
November 14, 2007.

To qualify for the program, faculty proposers need to submit this proposal form:

Each proposal must contain:

  • A statement of purpose for the proposal
    • what will this project do to enhance teaching, learning and/or research at CC?
  • A commitment to working with the ATS team to consult on and learn about/explore best practices related to their project
  • A proposed timeline
  • A statement of resources required and/or desired
  • A statement of resources that can be contributed
    • i.e. some funds that can go towards a student worker on a project

While a financial or resource commitment is not absolutely required for each project, it will be an encouraged aspect of approaching projects sustainably – now and in the future. 

For the November 14th proposal deadline:
While project timelines can run the gamut, we particularly encourage submissions that can include a Spring Semester 2008 or Summer 2008 work schedule.

What Happens Next

The Information Technology and Library Board, (which is made up of Dean's Office, Faculty, Library, Student and IT representatives), and ATS will convene to evaluate proposals and to brainstorm about which proposals can be supported, on what timeline, and with what resources. This process happens shortly have the submission deadline.
