Colorado College Polar Bear Trip

More Photos

How cold is it on the shores of Hudson Bay in November? Pretty nippy according to the lucky folks who braved the elements to have a chance to see polar bears and other artic wildlife in their native element. Professor Alex Vargo joined the expert naturalist from Natural Habitat Adventures to help us all see and understand so much about these magnificent creatures, and in the process, about ourselves.

Everyone who traveled to the far north (look up Churchill Manitoba in your atlas) has a "best" memory. For me, it was watching a lone male polar bear head out onto the vast, ice covered Bay. For a human, an unthinkable act. For the bear, a journey to life. This view of a creature who will find his best chance of survival where we would find certain death reminded me that we were seeing the way the world really works, not simply looking at an animal. We watched in silent awe.

There were many such moments for our group - for when CC alumni and parents join together for such an adventure, special things happen.

Take a look at our photo album then make plans to be part of the next great adventure – to warmer climes – to India!
