Personal Statement

I chose Colorado College, and I probably shouldn’t put this in writing, in large part because of the climate. The proximity to world-class recreational amenities was a bonus, but my primary reason for selecting Colorado College was - the weather.

What I did not fully appreciate as a high school senior were the unique educational opportunities made possible by the block plan and the college’s dedicated faculty. I know it sounds trite, but, every year since my graduation I have learned to value the opportunities at Colorado College more and more. I have learned to appreciate CC’s small class size, the access to top professors and the luxury of focus. I cannot count the number of times that I have longed for the opportunity to have a single intellectual focus. I believe that the opportunity to “dig in” without distraction leaves an indelible imprint on all CC graduates and I become more passionate about it as time passes.

As a student, I became aware of the fact that Colorado College’s endowment was not on par with many of its East Coast peers. I found this troubling. I worried that the college might need to back-off of its commitment to the block plan, the faculty or the campus facilities. My concern motivated me to become involved with the Development Office. I spent many evenings on the telephone with alumni and often met with alumni when they visited the campus. I also conducted a study of alumni giving patterns as part of a probability and statistics course. I joined the Development Committee and ultimately became a student co-chair.

Since my graduation I have applauded CC’s steady progress on the fundraising front. I am thrilled with the leap made by “Vision 2010”. The strategic goals and financial targets identified are vital to the continued growth and success of the college. I am very impressed by the progress that has been made in the development arena, though aware of how much remains to be done. I am proud of the student body the college attracts and the varied and meaningful educational opportunities that the college and its students create.

I would be honored to become a more active participant in the efforts to continue the upward trajectory that CC is on. If elected Trustee, I believe that my personal and professional experiences would allow me to be a solid financial steward and an asset in strategic planning. My varied board experiences would allow me to be an effective part of a governance team and an effective fundraiser.
