GRESHAM RILEY AWARD RECIPIENT 2007

Doug FoxDoug A. Fox

When Doug Fox was named Colorado Teacher of the Year in 1995 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, his colleagues praised him. Then-Dean Timothy Fuller said, “In my opinion, it would not be possible for him to be anything but an effective teacher in any situation.”

Today, Doug heaps equal praise on his fellow teachers and the students he taught. “It was all good. They were stimulating, and I consider myself very lucky to have had the companionship I did with students and colleagues alike.”

Born in Australia, Doug has been a frequent lecturer on campus and in the community, and also has delivered sermons at Shove Chapel and in local churches.
Doug taught courses on Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and ancient religions over more than 30 years at Colorado College.

In an article about his retirement in 1997, Doug recalled his early years. “There were several of us who came at that time (during the Benezet term), and we felt like young Turks ready to revolutionize education.”

Doug spent much of his academic career studying Sanskrit forms of Buddhism, saying that his interest in that subject illuminated his teaching and at the same time, his teaching illuminated new ideas for him in his scholarly work.

“Doug Fox exemplifies the qualities that come to mind when thinking of the ideal college professor — dynamic teacher, lively mind, inspiration to students, active scholar, campus citizen — and more,” said Kathryn Mohrman, Colorado College’s president when Doug won the Carnegie award.

In 2000, Doug delivered the Baccalaureate address, telling graduates he “hoped they had acquired the habit of thinking critically and constructively and facing the world with a certain amount of both objectivity and hope.”

Since he began what he calls “a complete retirement,” Doug spends time relaxing, taking frequent walks, and visiting with his son Michael and his wife Nicole, who live in Colorado Springs, and his daughter Elizabeth, who visits frequently.

Doug Fox passed away on March 2, 2008.
