Virginia
Londry
Though her title upon retirement this year was assistant manager of the
Colorado College Bookstore, Gini Londry was more human resources: She
provided a human touch, whether to the nervous freshman looking for reassurance
and a hug, or to visiting graduates who were impressed that she remembered
who they are.
During her 29 years with the bookstore, Gini became a jack-of-all-trades.
She helped adapt inventory to changing needs with the drastically changing
times, from the days when typewriters ruled, to today’s requisite
CDs and flash drives. Students came to know they could trust the bookstore
to obtain the textbooks and supplies needed for their course work and
to build their personal library of reference books and leisure reading,
important tenets to a liberal arts education. Gini would go the extra
mile to help without a second’s hesitation.
Gini helped keep things cohesive through three locations and a doubling
of space. Over the years, Gini juggled a variety of responsibilities,
from cash register accountability and deposits to textbook scholarship
student accounts.
Gini and former bookstore manager JoAnn Orsborn initiated the popular
alumni discount on all CC imprinted items, which offers a discount according
to the number of years since an alumnus’s graduation, up to the
50-year club members who get 50 percent off.
From her accrued business and personal acumen, Gini offers her most important
piece of advice for success: “Learn every name that you can of every
student, every faculty, and family member. Get to know their faces. Remember
them. It’s kind of like ‘Cheers.’ They’ll come
back when you know their name.”
