William
R. Ward '64
Bill Ward’s service to Colorado College began in the 1970s when
he and his friends Bill Hybl ’64 and Pete Susemihl ’66 were
called upon by then alumni director Barbara Yalich ’53 to re-energize
the alumni association. The basic structure of the alumni association
that is in place today resulted from their ideas, efforts and hard work.
Bill was already becoming well known in Denver and in his industry. His
leadership qualities led him to many positions of importance in the transportation
industry, including the chairmanship of the American Trucking Association.
Governor Roy Romer looked to Bill to serve on high level advisory committees
on transportation issues.
Meanwhile, the service to Colorado College continued and grew. Bill was
elected as a charter trustee on the Colorado College Board of Trustees
for the first of five terms in 1990. Bill has generously shared both wisdom
and personal resources. He served on the Cornerstone Arts Advisory Council;
and with Sharon, established two endowed funds. With those endowments,
Bill and Sharon helped complete the Campaign for Colorado College effort
and established a scholarship that will benefit generations of future
CC students. While on the board, Bill amassed a high level of expertise
in all the areas of concern to the governance of the college. He was elected
vice-chair in 1994 then elected to chair the board in 1997. Bill served
on the presidential search committee that resulted in the arrival of President
Richard F. Celeste then played a role in the subsequent road mapping that
led to the creation of Vision 2010.
The Board of Trustees voted emeriti status to Bill upon his retirement
from the board in 2005. In May of 2006, Bill’s fellow trustees,
both past and present, honored him at a special dinner.
