James McDowell '74 The original Mini first appeared in the UK in 1959. Intended to be the smallest possible car that could accommodate four adults and luggage, it measured approximately 10 feet long, 4 feet high and 4 feet wide. Today, thanks to James McDowell and the marketing blitz he oversees, orders are pouring in faster than BMW can churn out the retro-styled minicars with bulging headlights. Before joining MINI, Jim was BMW’s VP for Marketing. Long before that, he was a student at CC, where he drove a Volkswagen fastback, vintage 1966. He didn’t focus on automobiles as a career until joining Porsche in the mid-1980s after years in community planning, corporate planning and receiving his graduate degree at Harvard. We salute Jim today for his long automotive career and leadership in innovative marketing. Alumni Awards Main Page |
