Judith Reid Finley '58
Recently retired from her longtime job as coordinator of oral
history and photographs in the Special Collections Department
of Tutt Library, Judy Finley retains her active interest in college
and local history. She was directly involved in the Century Chest
project at CC. Opened in a grand ceremony on January 1, 2001,
this steel-riveted time capsule contained more than 150 letters,
photographs and other memorabilia sealed a century ago by the
citizens of Colorado Springs. Among the contributors were the
town’s founder, General William J. Palmer, and Vice President
Theodore Roosevelt.
Judy then edited and annotated The Century Chest Letters of 1901:
A Colorado Springs Legacy, published last year in the Colorado
College Studies series. The volume contains 31 selected letters
from 1901, a complete inventory of the Century Chest materials,
biographical sketches and photos of the letter writers and of
early Colorado Springs. Judy noted that much of the material reflects
concerns very similar to those expressed in the community today
– rapid growth, development of water resources, and the
need for more parks.
She also helped collect and list new letters resealed in the Century
Chest in April 2001, to be opened in 2101 – a project designed
to provide perspectives on the history of the Pikes Peak region
over a span of two hundred years.
In addition, she is the author of two books of historical vignettes
of daily life in the Pikes Peak region: Time Capsule 1900: Colorado
Springs a Century Ago and Coming of Age in Colorado Springs, 1945-1955.
She has been a frequent contributor of articles for the Colorado
College Bulletin and for Kiva Magazine.
After graduating summa cum laude from Colorado College in 1958,
Judy spent a year of study in France as a Rotary Foundation scholar.
She returned to her alma mater to complete an MA in French literature
after her marriage to David Finley, now a distinguished emeritus
member of the political science faculty at CC. While he was dean
of the college, Judy helped revivify the Faculty Club and later
served two terms on the Woman’s Educational Society Board.
Judy’s parents are the late Juan and Margaret Reid ’31,
each of whom served the college in extraordinary ways as well.
Judy was a member and chair of the Park and Recreation Advisory
Board and subsequently member and chair of the City Planning Commission.
Not content to withdraw from city politics after twelve years,
she joined the steering committee of the Partnership for Community
Design, chaired the 1987 Colorado Springs Beautification Plan,
and more recently served on the Colorado Springs Development Review
Task Force.
But most of the time she would rather be singing, as she has in
the Colorado Springs Chorale for the past thirty years.
