For 21
years, Lee Parks was perhaps the best known man on campus. After over 20
years in the Army, Lee arrived at Colorado College. What could he have
thought of us after years of training new helicopter pilots in synthetic
trainers to fly by instruments? It was clear – Lee had great affection
for CC students.
During his time here, Lee headed the Colorado College Security department and established the tone of quiet control that is the hallmark of CC security personnel. Making it a point to know students personally, Lee trained his staff to do likewise. Whether it was making sure the homecoming bonfire went off like clockwork (and enjoying it as much or more than the students and alumni) or whether it was that famous welcoming smile that made us all feel we were “back home” when we returned to campus, Lee Parks exemplified the dedicated and committed staff that CC has been fortunate to have over the years. While many remember Lee as “everybody’s champion,” many also remember him as the fellow with the ready laugh and smile, a relentless lover of limericks, and a man who would turn your practical joke back on you. We all know students learn in the classroom and out, and the gentle Lee Parks was a part of that education. It is important that the alumni association recognize and celebrate one who was an integral part of making the CC experience special for us as students and when we returned as alumni. |
