Susan Schlessman Duncan '52
Susan Duncan has devoted herself to her children, her husband and her community for many years. Susan also answered the call for help from her alma mater. The rest, as they say, is history. She is now trustee emerita of the college, having served from 1985-1997 on the CC Board of Trustees. During that time, she served as a real leader; demonstrating a unique commitment of energy, enthusiasm, time and resources to insure a bright future for the college.

Susan served as co-chair of the $53 million campaign in the 1980s. As Honorary co-chair for the current Campaign for Colorado College, now in its final year, Susan’s wisdom and good sense have been an invaluable guide.

In addition to that service, Susan has planned and hosted events for alumni in Denver, is a member of Friends of Tutt Library, is a life-time member of The Woman’s Educational Society, has planned reunions and been a devoted alumna of her sorority. Gamma Phi Beta recently recognized Susan by selecting her for the Alumnae Philanthropic Award for her efforts on behalf of their national philanthropic project which provides camping experiences for young girls.

The many members of her family who have also come to CC - parents, brother, cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews, and her son Michael - join Susan in their love of the college.

Susan’s effectiveness as a fund-raiser for the college is matched by her own generosity. Those of us who have attended CC over the past 35 years or so have Susan and her family to thank for the hours of enjoyment and competition in Schlessman pool. Students in the Economics department have also benefited from the visiting professors that come through the Schlessman Executive in Residence program.

Community service is not a new concept to Susan Duncan. In addition to her efforts on behalf of Colorado College, Susan has been a committed volunteer in her community, serving on the board of trustees for the Denver YMCA. In recognition of her contribution to the "Y", the new Susan M. Duncan Family Branch was dedicated last year.

She gives much of her time to the Iliff School of Theology, P.E.O., and a number of foundations, including the Schlessman Family Foundation.

Susan credits CC with being a major influence in helping her be of service to others in her community. It is CC that has benefited from the commitment of this remarkable alumna.
