Reverend
Kenneth W. Burton,
Professor Emeritus

For many CC alumni, the words “I do” are inexorably linked to The Reverend Kenneth Burton, Dean of the CC chapel from 1961-1992.

While it is a myth that 60% of CC alumni are married to one another, it is a fact that a huge proportion of the 15% who are married to one another repeated their vows before The Reverend Burton. It has been so important to his former students to have Ken Burton officiate at their weddings, that they have flown him all over the world, not imagining having someone else help them cross that important threshold.

Students from all disciplines remember religion courses from Ken. He was involved with the introduction of the Block Plan as well as with its subsequent reviewing. Students and community members were provoked to deep thought at Sunday morning chapel services. His gentle challenge to consider a higher good and his example of grace and caring provided a much needed model for students and staff alike.

But Dr. Burton thundered as well, captivating us with his insightful characterizations on the stage. And who would dare speak when those words “Should anyone here know just cause…” were issued as a challenge during the wedding ceremony?

When Ken Burton retired, hundreds of alumni arrived for a special service and celebration in Shove Chapel. Many others sent their best wishes, all revealing a moment when Ken’s friendship or guidance set them on a new or better path.

So, the spiritual guide for a generation of CC alumni, who offered counsel and comfort, and many good times, was known and loved by all. Few can match the influence and impact of Ken Burton on the lives of students, alumni, fellow faculty and staff.
