Bill Beaver,
class of '67, returned from Vietnam to travel to Oxford University and a
life of unexpected and rewarding opportunities.
His CC mentors contributed to the choices that have guided Bill. His devotion to history began in Tom K. Barton’s class, where students were told that “you are now historians, and that is how I shall treat you.” Bill realized that he was no longer just an observer, but was on the playing field. The playing field turned out to be in England, where, to his own surprise, he became an Anglican priest, at one point serving for 15 years in one of the most deprived inner city parishes in the UK. During those years Bill also handled communications or marketing for Britain’s largest children’s charity, one of the world’s largest banks and the management team for The Industrial Society, Europe’s largest independent developers of people. In 1997, the two halves of Bill’s life came together when he became the first communications director for the Archbishops’ Council of the Church of England. In that post Beaver has worked to ensure that there is a distinctively moral, courteous, compassionate Christian voice in national debates. One of his earliest challenges was to deal with the international onslaught of attention surrounding the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. With the task of communicating with millions of people, in Britain and throughout the 161 nation Anglican Communion, he has launched the Church of England into the Internet age. He encourages the use of good communications skills and disciplines to enable the Church to continue its millennium and a half tradition of serving God and the nation. Bringing a voice to the voiceless, a commitment to ethical behavior in business, and helping to show others learn how to lead, Bill Beaver serves as an example to us all. |
