Robert D. Loevy
Robert "Bob" Loevy has earned a special place in the history
of Colorado College. when the College decided to create a new written
history for its 125th Anniversary, the plan was for a scholarly, thorough
and exciting account of the college's first 125 years. bob Loevy was tapped
to research and author Colorado College: A Place of Learning 1874-1999."
With the publication of the newest history of Colorado College, Bob has
created a work that increases our understanding of the College. Not just
a list of facts or dates, Bob's history reflects his knowledge of the
political and social forces of the times, and places the College's history
into perspective.
To help alumni learn about and understand the "way things were"
at the College, Bob traveled to alumni gatherings all over the country
and throughout the Colorado Springs community. He autographed hundreds
of books for interested alumni and friends of the College. Working with
his son Walt Loevy, Bob created a video accompaniment of his book that
includes views of the campus and portraits of the College's leaders through
the decades.
It was no surprise to the Alumni Association that Bob dedicated himself
to this project. His entire career at Colorado College has featured a
willingness to join alumni and friends to engage in arresting political
discussions. Bob is regularly requested by alumni groups to join them
for programs, especially surrounding elections. Bob has never said no
to a request from an alumni group.
When the next history of the College is written, it should be recorded
that Bob Loevy gave a year of his life to researching, understanding,
and explaining the history of the College. In addition to being one of
CC's historians, Bob has made his own impact on CC's history. He strongly
supported the Block Plan when it was adopted by the faculty in 1969 and
chaired the faculty committee which supervised the planning and design
of Worner Campus Center and Barnes Science Center. The author of many
books on Civil Rights, politics and political history, and an inspiring
teacher, Bob has earned a place of honor in Colorado College history.
